Reading Rebecca Pt. 5

This post will probably be short. With it being so close to Thanksgiving that I haven't been online much today. And I so haven't had the time to write up a nice long post about these chapters. But I have read them.

Chapter 13--

Begins with her panic attack that Maxim will die on his way to London and she'll be left a widow.
Features her sneaking outside the house to eat cookies in between meals.
Our narrator has an interesting little chat with Ben that leads the reader to suspect that this "idiot" witnessed Rebecca doing something improper in the beach cottage and was threatened with the insane asylum if he ever told her secret.
It's an interesting conversation because it's one of the conversations that leads the reader to suspect that Rebecca was NOT a perfect wife and that she had plenty of dark, dirty secrets of her own.
I especially loved the line, "SHE GAVE YOU THE FEELING OF A SNAKE."
Unfortunately, our narrator still doesn't trust Ben.
She returns to the house to find Mrs. Danvers has her own secrets. She's entertaining an unwelcome guest. A slimy weasel of a man. I'm sure his past is connected with Rebecca's somehow. I'm not quite sure how. But the two are probably in cahoots about something.

Chapter 14
Our narrator goes where she shouldn't--the west wing--why is it always the west wing that's forbidden I wonder??? Anyway, she goes exploring in Rebecca's room and gets a shockingly frightening tour from Mrs. Danvers. She's crazy, she's spooky, she's obviously psychotic. I'm reminded of A Rose For Emily. There are lots of details in this chapter. It's probably the moodiest chapter so far in terms of establishing the whole gothic spooky theme.

Chapter 15

The return of Beatrice. I do love her. I'm glad our narrator is making a friend. The visit with the grandmother didn't go so well. I'm compelled to agree with our narrator that it was a "funny sort of day."
